How Head Circumference Percentiles Work

Head circumference is measured at the largest point around the head (above the eyebrows and ears, around the back of the skull). This measurement reflects brain size and growth rate.

This calculator uses:

  • WHO standards (0–23 months): Based on children in optimal growth conditions, with monthly data points
  • CDC charts (24–36 months): Based on US population data, covering the 24–36 month range

Data is only available for ages 0–36 months. After 36 months, head circumference is not routinely plotted on growth charts because brain growth has largely plateaued.
