Fertile Window Calculator
See your 6-day fertile window with day-by-day conception probability.
Your fertile window is not a single day — it is a 6-day span anchored around ovulation where conception is biologically possible. This calculator visualizes that window with day-by-day conception probabilities drawn directly from the Wilcox et al. 1995 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, the most cited dataset on intercourse timing and conception.
Enter your estimated ovulation date and see exactly how your chances shift across the window — from roughly 10% five days before ovulation up to 33% on ovulation day itself. Understanding which days carry the highest probability helps you time intercourse strategically, whether you have regular cycles or are managing PCOS and irregular timing.
Understanding Your Fertile Window Results
The chart displays your 6-day fertile window with a probability bar for each day relative to ovulation. Day O-5 (five days before ovulation) carries the lowest probability at roughly 10%, while ovulation day (O-0) peaks at approximately 33%. The steep rise from O-3 onward reflects both sperm survival dynamics and egg viability timing.
The peak days — O-2, O-1, and O-0 — account for roughly 27%, 31%, and 33% conception probability respectively. If you can only time intercourse for a subset of the window, concentrating on these three days gives the highest per-act probability. Intercourse on O-1 alone gives you nearly the same chance as ovulation day itself.
Cumulative probability across multiple days in the window is meaningfully higher than any single day. Couples who have intercourse on every day of the fertile window see substantially better per-cycle outcomes than those who target only one day. The probabilities shown are per-act estimates from a single intercourse event on that day.
These probabilities are population averages derived from 221 women with presumably normal fertility. Individual results vary based on age, sperm quality, reproductive health, and whether ovulation is confirmed. Use this chart as a planning guide and confirm ovulation timing with OPKs or basal body temperature charting for the most actionable results.
How the Fertile Window Calculator Works
This calculator maps the Wilcox et al. 1995 day-specific conception probability data onto your personal cycle timeline. The Wilcox study followed 221 women who attempted to conceive, logging the timing of intercourse across 625 menstrual cycles and tracking which pregnancies resulted. This yielded the most granular per-day probability dataset available for human conception timing.
The 6-day fertile window emerges from two biological constraints: sperm can survive up to 5 days in the female reproductive tract under optimal cervical mucus conditions, and the egg is viable for 12-24 hours after ovulation. This means intercourse from 5 days before through the day of ovulation can theoretically result in conception — with probabilities that rise sharply as ovulation approaches.
Formulas
Fertile window = Ovulation day − 5 through Ovulation day (O-5 to O-0)
Peak days = O-2, O-1, O-0 (highest per-day conception probability)
Probability source = Wilcox 1995 day-specific data (NEJM 1995;333:1517-1521)
Egg viability window = 12-24 hours post-ovulation
Assumptions
- Ovulation date is accurately estimated or confirmed by OPK or BBT
- Sperm survival in the reproductive tract is up to 5 days under optimal mucus conditions
- The egg is viable for 12-24 hours after release from the follicle
- Probability values are population averages from women with presumed normal fertility
Limitations & Edge Cases
- Irregular cycles (PCOS, thyroid disorders) make ovulation date estimation unreliable — OPK confirmation is essential
- Anovulatory cycles produce no fertile window — the calculator cannot detect absence of ovulation
- Luteal phase defects or short luteal phases may shift the effective fertile window relative to the next period
- Sperm survival varies with semen quality — men with lower motility or count may have a shorter effective sperm survival window

Using This Calculator with PCOS and Irregular Cycles
With a regular cycle, the fertile window is a fairly predictable 6-day span anchored around your estimated ovulation day. With PCOS or irregular cycles, that window widens considerably — and with it, the probability estimates for each day shift too.
PCOS can cause the follicular phase to extend unpredictably, meaning ovulation might occur anywhere across a wide range of days. If your typical cycles span 21 to 40 days, your fertile window could theoretically span weeks rather than days. The per-day conception probabilities shown in this calculator assume standard cycle timing — with PCOS, the peak days are still the same relative to when you actually ovulate, but predicting which calendar day that will be becomes much harder.
This is why OPK (ovulation predictor kit) confirmation matters so much for women with PCOS. Rather than relying on calendar-predicted days, testing with OPKs gives you a direct signal — the LH surge that triggers ovulation — so the probability table in this calculator can be anchored to your real ovulation day rather than an estimate. Combine OPK testing with this calculator for the most actionable picture.
If you notice persistent anovulatory cycles (your OPK never shows a clear surge, or your BBT chart doesn't show the expected temperature shift), consider reaching out to your OB-GYN or a reproductive specialist. PCOS-related anovulation is very treatable with targeted interventions.

When to Contact Your Healthcare Provider
- You have been timing intercourse to your fertile window for 12+ months without conception (6+ months if over 35)
- You consistently fail to detect an LH surge with OPKs or see no BBT shift after ovulation
- You experience pain during intercourse or pelvic pain around ovulation
- Your partner has concerns about sperm quality or has not had a semen analysis
