How Pregnancy Protein Needs Are Calculated

Protein requirements during pregnancy are based on your body weight and gestational age. The calculation uses standard ACOG/IOM guidelines:

  • First trimester (weeks 1–12): 0.8 g/kg body weight — same as baseline adult requirements
  • Second trimester (weeks 13–27): 1.1 g/kg body weight, minimum 71 g/day
  • Third trimester (weeks 28+): 1.1 g/kg body weight, minimum 71 g/day

The 71 g/day minimum in T2/T3 ensures adequate protein for rapid fetal growth regardless of body weight. If your weight-based calculation is lower, the 71 g minimum applies.
