Intercourse Timing Optimizer

Find your best days to conceive based on ovulation date, with each day ranked Best, Good, or OK by conception probability.

How Timing Affects Conception

The Wilcox 1995 study tracked 221 healthy women through 625 menstrual cycles, measuring conception rates per cycle relative to the day of ovulation. The study remains the most-cited source for day-specific conception probabilities.

Tier System

  • Best (green): O−2, O−1, O day — probability ≥ 27%. Peak fertile window; highest conception chance.
  • Good (blue): O−4, O−3 — probability 14–27%. Good odds as sperm can survive until ovulation.
  • OK (gray): O−5, O+1 — probability below 14%. Lower chance but still possible within sperm viability window.

The probability column shows the per-cycle conception probability for each day. The fertile window shown depends on your sperm survival days setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best days to have intercourse to conceive?

Based on Wilcox 1995 research, the highest conception probability occurs on the 2 days before ovulation and on ovulation day itself (tier "Best", ~27–33% per cycle). The 3–4 days before ovulation offer good odds (tier "Good", ~14–27%). The 5th day before and 1 day after ovulation have lower probability (tier "OK", under 14%).

How long do sperm survive?

Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days under favorable cervical mucus conditions, though most sperm lose viability within 2–3 days. This means intercourse several days before ovulation can still result in conception.

Why is the day before ovulation often better than ovulation day?

An egg is only viable for 12–24 hours after ovulation. Having intercourse shortly before ovulation ensures sperm are already present and waiting when the egg is released. The Wilcox 1995 study found the 2 days before ovulation had slightly higher conception rates than ovulation day in some analyses.

How do I know when I'm ovulating?

The most reliable methods include: LH surge detection using ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), basal body temperature (BBT) charting, tracking cervical mucus changes (egg-white consistency indicates peak fertility), and cycle-length-based prediction using an ovulation calculator.

Does intercourse frequency affect conception chances?

Daily or every-other-day intercourse during the fertile window is generally recommended. Some research suggests daily intercourse around ovulation slightly increases conception rates compared to every-other-day. Abstaining for more than 5–7 days is not recommended as it may reduce sperm quality.
